The enchanted island of Iceland knows no limits. Like yesterday when we were out on a bout, suddenly 40 Orcas (killer whales) comes up to play next to us and flick their tails in the air and jump in and out of the water as if half bird half fish. It was an extraordinary experience beyond belief and unfortunately the sights of them are not as common anymore. Even our captain who’s been steering the ship for five years without ever seeing a live Orca, was equally gobsmacked and just stood in awe with a draw drop like all the rest of us.

One of the people of board was also the trainer for Keiko, the Orca who starred in “Free Willy” the famous movie of 1993. He had plenty of stories to tell us about Orcas, how they live and how breath while swimming the waters from North to south.

These best hunters of the sea are named “killer whales’ because they hunt in groups and can demolish a huge blue whale or a hump back whale in minutes. They may be fierce and cruel hunters, but they are equally known for their high level of intelligence. Having the second largest brain among marine mammals they display levels of high sophisticated behavior and people who have interacted closely with them report of a species known for its curiosity, playfulness and skill in solving problems. They communicate through sounds and modern researches have proven how each particular clan how their own dialect and seem to take one certain ‘cultural’ behavior from each other. In certain ways they are similar to humans. They reach adolescence around 15, women breed to they are 40 and the average age is about 60, but some may live to about 90.

Personally I was completely stunned by the interaction, in awe of their sophisticated maneuvers, as if greeting us and communicating in a peculiar way.  In their playful behavior they swam around the boat, wagged their tails and fins as if dancing and just greeted us to let us know ‘everything is in perfect harmony’ if we can just learn to relax a little better. Just chill with life, embrace what is good and wholesome and refine our hearing a little to this miracle of life unfolding every second.
